Head of SchoolHead of School Salem Baptist Christian School Let everything you do and say here reflect your faithful commitment to serve Jesus Christ excellently. Job Description The Head of School is a member of the staff of Salem Baptist Church, and as such is under the authority of the pastor. He or she is the chief administrator of the school and is responsible to both the Salem Baptist Church School Board and the senior pastor in accordance with the constitution and by-laws of Salem Baptist Church. As a servant leader, he or she is charged with ministering to the needs of personnel, students, and parents. He or she has the responsibility to keep the School Board informed about the school and to assist the board with its leadership role; to keep the pastor and the board abreast of finances, enrollment, personnel, curriculum and accreditation; to staff all school positions with qualified Christian individuals; to represent the school to the community; and for each aspect of the operation of the school ministry. He or she administers and supervises the educational activities of the school within the adopted policies of the Salem Baptist Christian School Board. Qualifications The Head of School shall have accepted Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior and shall demonstrate through his or her daily personal walk a clear testimony of the Lordship of Christ. He or she shall be an active member of Salem Baptist Church. The Head of School shall have an undergraduate degree, and at least a master’s degree, preferably in the areas of education and administration. He or she shall have experience in supervision and/or administration in K-12 education. Responsibilities and Duties Spiritual As a servant leader, he or she is charged with ministering to the needs of personnel, students, and parents. 1. The Head of School seeks to be a role model who reflects the importance of prayer, Scripture study and personal spiritual growth, both on and off campus. 2. The Head of School encourages students to accept Christ and grow in their faith, as well as personally encouraging staff and faculty to be aware of spiritual needs of students. 3. The Head of School supports the church covenant and doctrinal statement of Salem Baptist Church and Christian School. 4. The Head of School assists in the spiritual growth of the faculty by participation and promotion of activities such as faculty devotions. Personnel 1. Job Descriptions and Requirements The Head of School is responsible to establish requirements for each employee position consistent with the school’s philosophy, in conformity with accreditation requirements and within the approved budget. Each position shall have a current job description. 2. Recruitment and Hiring The Head of School is responsible to recruit qualified Christian individuals for employment openings and to screen all candidates properly prior to hiring them. 3. Employee Supervision The Head of School is responsible for the regular supervision and evaluation of all employees. Supervision and evaluation may be accomplished through other authorized employees. 4. Professional Development The Head of School is responsible for a planned program of ongoing professional development for employees. 5. Salaries and Benefits The Head of School is responsible to implement a salary scale based on ACSI regional averages for comparably- sized schools. Employee benefits should be annually reviewed to ensure they enable the school to minister to employees. Operations The Head of School has responsibility for each aspect of the operation of the school ministry. 1. School Philosophy and Objectives The Head of School is responsible to ensure the school operates consistently with its philosophy and objectives, in harmony with Salem Baptist Church. The philosophy and objectives should be regularly reviewed and revised as appropriate. 2. School Practices and Procedures The Head of School is responsible for the development of operating practices and procedures and documenting them in the Parent-Student Handbook and Employee Handbook. Handbooks should be reviewed annually and revised as necessary. The Head of School is to maintain proper relationships with appropriate government agencies, and to be knowledgeable of legal requirements upon private/Christian schools. 3. Academic Program Head of School is responsible for the development of an academic program that has a biblical worldview and challenges students, regardless of their academic ability. 4. School Finances The Head of School is responsible for the development of an annual budget that enables the school to meet its educational objectives. The tuition and fee schedule should provide the income needed for the school program and be comparable to ACSI regional tuition rates of comparably-sized schools. The Head of School should try to secure alternative funding for school needs (i.e., grants and donations) and broaden the financial base of the school. 5. Student Discipline The Head of School is responsible for development and implementation of a student discipline program. 6. School Activities The Head of School is to keep an archive of important school activities. Communication The Head of School has responsibility to represent the school to the community. 1. Public Relations The Head of School should take advantage of opportunities to promote the school in the community and to develop various means of promotion. The Head of School should serve as the primary school representative. 2. Inquiries and Complaints The Head of School should be available to meet interested families, school families and school employees. Attention should be given to resolving concerns consistent with established school policy or practice. School Board Interaction The Head of School has responsibility to keep the School Board informed about the school and to assist the board with its leadership role. 1. Information and Reporting The Head of School is responsible to make regular reports of school enrollment and financial condition. Other school activities related to student activities, school events, personnel, and accreditation may also be included in the report. 2. Proposed Policy The Head of School is responsible to assist the School Board with development of board policy or revisions to it. 3. Board Meetings The Head of School is responsible to prepare an agenda, with the board chairman, for regular meetings. The agenda should be available to the Board prior to the meeting. During regular meetings, the Head of School presents a Head of School’s Report and each agenda item to the board. 4. Strategic Planning The Head of School and board work together to develop the school’s strategic plan and to evaluate progress annually. Report to Senior Pastor 1. The Head of School is expected to participate in monthly Senior Leadership Meetings. 2. The Head of School will periodically meet individually with the Senior Pastor to keep him abreast of SBCS status. 3. The Head of School will obtain permission from the Pastor before hiring employees. 4. The Head of School is responsible for immediately notifying the Pastor in the event of serious disciplinary issues, employee conflicts, when emergency services are called to the campus of Salem Baptist Christian School, and when any other major or catastrophic event takes place. Office Hours, Salary and Benefits 1. The Head of School should maintain a regular office presence. 2. The Head of School will be given appropriate comp time for activities on evenings and weekends. 3. The salary of the Head of School is to be set by the SBCS School Board. 4. The benefits of the Head of School are defined by the SBCS Employee Handbook. Additional Responsibilities as Required 1. From time to time, additional responsibilities may become necessary that are not noted in this description. These will be assigned by agreement of the Senior Pastor and the SBCS School Board.
